Kade Simpson becomes Footy’s biggest loser as Saints Edge Carlton

Kade Simpson has gotten an AFL record that no player ever wants to be associated with.

Carlton’s star defender became the league’s biggest loser Thursday night when St. Kilda swept the blues aside at Marvel Stadium.

A late push was not enough to help the blues close the gap as the Saints clinched an 18-point win, jumped 3-2, and ended Carlton’s winning streak in two games.

But the loss was a deeper pain for Simpson, who had hoped to avoid the unwanted recording for as long as possible.

The defeat made it number 208 for Simpson, who has played a total of 330 games since joining the blues in 2002. This is the third most common game in club history.

For the statistical nerds out there, this means that Simpson’s loss percentage is a staggering 63 percent.

He moves alongside former Fitzroy legend Kevin Murray, who had held the record for 46 years after hanging up his boots in 1974.

Since Simpson was selected by the Blues with the 45th election in the 2002 National Draft, he has only played in two seasons in which the Blues set a winning record. In two seasons (2012 and 2013) they ended with an 11-11 record.

The tiny star defender has seen action six times in September, with the blues taking just two wins.

They overthrew Essendon in 2011 before falling to the west coast the following week. They took care of Richmond in 2013 before Sydney sent them to pack.

Simpson has had more lows than highs during his 17-year career in AFL, with the blues ending up five times in his time span.

But he has remained a constant in the blues since he cracked the top 22 in 2005. From 2006 to 2019, Simpson’s were the most missed games in one season last year when he missed four in total.

He put together a phenomenal run of 158 consecutive games between 2005 and 2012, the 13th longest series in the game’s history.

Despite the unwanted record of being the AFL’s biggest loser, Simmo has become a fan favorite of the blues believers.

Simpson can become the absolute record holder of the AFL next week when the Blues compete against Sydney in the MCG on Sunday.
