Jonathan Kuminga, who is joining the 2021 NBA Draft Class, is great for Warriors

Former Warriors striker Omri Casspi recently had Golden State coach Steve Kerr on his podcast.

And the Israeli-born began the episode with an amazing story that highlights Kerr’s empathy and compassion.

In December 2017, Casspi received an email from a family friend who brought the tragic news that her son was diagnosed with a very advanced form of cancer.

“He loved the warriors,” said Casspi. “They went on a trip to (the Bay Area) to see us play in some games. The boy is such a big fan of you, the team, Steph (Curry) and the rest of the guys. And people have to practice this understand facilities in the NBA are like a kind of temple.

“I don’t remember a team I played because I let someone into the practice facility during the season. I told you the story about the situation and you allowed them to come into practice.

“We usually had a balcony where guests stayed during training. I’ll never forget it – you went up there and insisted that the boy and his mother come down and watch the training from the square. One of the most famous Anytime teams – and a child with cancer can experience this firsthand. “

But it gets better.

“I remember taking some pictures after training and seeing how you spoke to the mother,” said Casspi. “I said give me 20-30 minutes – I’ll take a shower, stretch, get my ice cream, etc. – I’ll come back and take her out for lunch. I came back 30-40 minutes later and I still see you there. I’m talking the mother – both of you with tears in your eyes. I will never forget this picture.

“The next day you updated your tickets, you brought them backstage, you brought them to the VIP lounge. Klay (Thompson) came over and gave them signed shoes. I literally remember the son with tears in the eyes.”

Unfortunately, the story has a very sad ending.

“They flew back to Israel a few days later (and a few weeks later) when the boy died,” said Casspi. “I don’t remember if I ever said thank you. It’s one of the most amazing things a person can do. Thank you.”

Kerr then offered his perspective.

“I always felt that the most important thing we can do as NBA players and coaches is to make people happy,” he said. “For our fans, but especially for people who have problems … Moments like this are always very down to earth, they are very humble and very emotional.

“They are very important to all of us. I am glad that the visit has achieved so much.”

Kerr is really an incredible person.
