Jamill Jones: Former assistant coach at Wake Forest University sentenced after hitting a man who later died

37-year-old Jamill Jones was convicted in February of third-degree bodily harm related to the death of Sandor Szabo from Boca Raton, Florida, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said. As part of his sentence, Jones will have to wait three years on probation, do 1,500 hours of community service, and pay a $ 1,000 fine, Katz said.

The two men got into a confrontation in the Queens district at around 1:40 a.m. on August 5, 2018, and Jones is said to have hit Szabo in the face, according to the New York City Police Department.
Wake Forest Coach reportedly hit a man, set off and is now charged after the man died

According to court rulings, Szabo went for a walk in the neighborhood after getting out of a rideshare vehicle. He reportedly went to Jones’ car, hit the window, and ran away.

Jones got out of his car and chased Szabo, finally caught up with him and hit him in the face, according to prosecutors.

Szabo fell back, hit his head on the sidewalk and lost consciousness, according to the police. Police say Jones left the scene and Szabo was taken to a hospital where he died of his injuries two days later. Szabo had been treated for fractures on the left side of his face and the back of his head, as well as bleeding in the brain, according to Jones’ complaint.

“This was a tragic incident that ended a man’s life and devastated his family, a violent attempt that should never have happened,” said Katz. “Violence is never the answer to settling a dispute.”

Jones’ lawyer Christopher Renfroe told CNN that he thought Jones was a great man and customer.

“I wish him all the best and hope that the Szabo family can find peace,” said Renfroe.

Jones resigned from the Wake Forest in April 2019. He was on leave after the incident.
