In the last laps, Mercedes secures a double victory in the second stage of the First Formula One World Championship

Meanwhile, his teammate Walter Botass was second, and Max Verstapen from Red Bull won third place.

In the start, Hamilton retained his lead, followed by Verstapen and Carlos Sains Jr. (“McLaren”). The two Ferrari drivers experienced a major fiasco – Charles Leclair, who started from the 14th place, collided with Sebastian Fitt, who started from the tenth position in the third corner. They both entered the pits, but quickly withdrew. Lecher blamed the incident.

Meanwhile, Sains was unable to keep up the pace and gradually lost his position, allowing Botas to take third place and Alexander Alfons, a member of Verstapen’s team, to fourth. The leading four remained even after the first boxing visits and the course of the race was monotonous.

True, five laps before the finish, Botass began to threaten Verstapen’s second position, which was conquered a little later. In addition, “Red Bull” had to pay for a quick pit stop, because Verstapen had to go to the pits again a few laps before the finish, but he did not lose his third position.

Albon finished fourth, but Lendo Norris (“McLaren”), who climbed the podium in the previous stage, took the fifth place in the straight line, overtaking two Racing Point pilots – Serhio Peres and Lens Strols. Daniel Rikjardo (“Renault”) took eighth place, Sains finished ninth, but Danilail Kvatti (“AlphaTauri”) was last.

It has already been reported that the third training runs scheduled for Saturday were canceled due to the rain, and the qualifying race, which started with the safety car going to the track by checking its coverage, was also delayed. Hamilton won the F-1 record-breaking 89th qualifying victory.

Last weekend, the first stage of this season took place right on the Spielberg track – the Austrian “Grand Prix”. Botass turned out to be the fastest, but Lekler finished second.

In the overall standings, after two stages, Botass leads with 43 points, followed by Hamilton with 37 points, and Norris is third with 26 points.

After two stages in Austria, the next stage is expected in Hungary on July 19.

A record number of races were planned for this season (22), but due to the pandemic, the organizers decided to stick to 18 stages.

Last season, Hamilton was crowned world champion, triumphing for the sixth time in his career and for the third time in a row.
