‘I don’t want to die’: Gregg Popovich explains why he still wears a mask in the NBA bubble

On Wednesday, Spurs’ coach Gregg Popovich said on TNT’s “The Arena” that he plans to wear his mask whenever he can while in the NBA bubble in Orlando.

“I don’t want to die,” said Popovich, who is the oldest coach in the NBA, after TNT host Charles Barkley asked him if he was concerned that older adults were at an increased risk of dying from complications of the coronavirus.

“The older you are, the more susceptible you may be, and even if you go through it, there seem to be long lasting complications whether it’s lung, heart, brain or anything else, so each of us needs to be a little bit bigger to take it very seriously, “said Popovich.

Popovich joins New Orleans pelican coach Alvin Gentry, 65, and Houston Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni, 69, as high-risk coaches who have decided to participate in the renewed championship season. The 69-year-old coach said he wears the mask to practice and takes it off when he has something to say in the closed environment.

Last week, Popovich said he felt more confident in the bubble than he would have been if he had returned home to Texas, where coronavirus cases continue to rise across the state. He also voiced his concerns about how Texas leaders are handling the coronavirus pandemic, calling Governor Gregg Abbott and Lt. Governor Dan Patrick “cowards” who are afraid of President Donald Trump.

While in the NBA bubble, Popovich has expressed many times that he and other coaches and players will continue to use the raise as an opportunity to illuminate social injustices.

“Since we’re here and since we’re going to play some games, we have a responsibility to continue the conversation and that will be our main mantra for all of us … because it’s an opportunity to make sure this moment doesn’t stop,” she said. during the interview with “The Arena”.
