The quest of the Pro League has failed. From 1 July 2021, Belgian professional football and sports brokers are subject to the preventive money laundering law.
That was decided in the early evening by the Parliament’s Finance and Budget Committee. Joris Vandenbroucke’s amendment (SP.a) was supported by Groen / Ecolo, PS, PvdA / PTB, CD&V and Vlaams Belang.
The Pro League’s ultimate attempt to stop the decision came too late. From July 2021, the identity of the persons involved in the transactions will be additionally checked. Drivers who make a mistake risk heavy fines and prison terms.
