Former Pro Bowl cornerback regrets not signing with Patriots

Major League Soccer begins the MLS is Back tournament in its Disney World “bubble” today, with the start of the revolution Thursday at 8 p.m. against the Montreal Impact.

The tournament has already encountered major obstacles, with FC Dallas withdrawing due to 10 positive players for COVID-19, and other matches having to be postponed due to coronavirus problems.

While other leagues are turning to their own restart plans, the sports world continues to see it through the lens of broader social issues.

After Georgia senator (and Atlanta Dream co-owner) Kelly Loeffler opposed WNBA plans for social justice (particularly her intention to honor the Black Lives Matter movement), former Dream Layshia player Clarendon responded – first on social media – and in an interview with ABC News.

“As a black woman, as a queer woman in sport, my existence is political like sport,” said Clarendon.

DeAngelo Hall’s biggest regret: In a recent story for NFL.com, former players who became analysts named the biggest regrets of their careers. Former cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who has completed three Pro Bowls in 14 seasons in the NFL, had an interesting response.

He thought back to a time after the 2008 season when he was a free agent. A former first-round pick at the peak of his career, he was a coveted target.

Eventually he signed again with Washington, but Hall admitted he should have taken less money to play for Bill Belichick in New England.

“When I signed up to play half the season with Washington in 2008, there was a line in my contract that said the team couldn’t franchise me next season,” said Hall. “I remember that negotiations for a new deal with Washington were not going well, and there were other teams in the photo, including New England. At the time, the players had not signed short-term contracts, but Randy Moss had just signed a $ 27 million, three-year contract with the Patriots. I couldn’t believe it.

“In my own contract discussions with the Pats, I remember Bill Belichick telling me that they couldn’t give me the contract that Moss had signed,” said Hall. “Being a young and greedy knucklehead, I chose to stay in Washington on a long-term contract [six years, $54 million], which ultimately earned me the same annual salary as Moss. “

However, in the end, Hall admitted that he had lost his chance to play in big games. Washington only made the playoffs twice in the next nine seasons, losing twice on the wildcard weekend. The Patriots made the playoffs each year during this streak, winning two Super Bowls.

“Over a few million, I could have changed my heritage by being part of this dynasty,” concluded Hall. “It was on the table for me, and I wish I had made the decision to take less money and play for Belichick.”
