Everything you need to know before the UEFA Champions League draw

The draw for the Champions League is set for Friday 10 July in Nyon, Switzerland, at 6:00 am EST. The competition was halted by Covid-19 in mid-March and UEFA was forced to delay its plans to complete the competition until there was no clarity regarding national competitions.

The story so far away

Half of the 8 qualifiers have already been decided with Atalanta, RB Leipzig, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain who have all secured a place in the draw for the last 8 before the shutdown.

Four ties have yet to be completed. First leg scores in brackets.

Manchester City (2) vs. Real Madrid (1)

Bayern Munich (3) vs. Chelsea (0)

Juventus (0) vs. Lyon (1)

Barcelona (1) vs. Naples (1)

The matches will be played on August 7 or August 8 in places that have yet to be confirmed. Authorization from national and local health authorities is required for games to be played in their original locations. If the required distances are not imminent, the second stage will be transferred to the stadiums of Porto and Guimarães.

What happens next

An unprecedented situation has led UEFA to a single format. It will be an open draw for the fourth and semifinals, and teams from the same country will be able to draw against each other. All games will be eliminated directly until the end of the same day and all games from the quarterfinals to the final will be played in Lisbon, Portugal.

The quarterfinals will start on August 12th and there will be a game from the day until August 15th. The semifinals will be played on August 18 and 19 with the final on August 23 at the home stadium of Benfica, the Estádio do Sport. All games will begin at 15:00 EST.

Women’s Champions League

Women’s competition has fewer wrinkles than the male version. The quarter-final draw was made in November 2019 after the completion of the round of 16 and before the closure of Covid-19. The changes for the quarterfinals and beyond refer to the format and position.

The rest of the competition will be played as a knockout tournament with the games taking place from 21 to 30 August at the San Mamés stadium in Bilbao and at the Anoeta stadium in San Sebastián.
