Dr. Anthony Fauci takes first place in the opening game between Washington Nationals and New York Yankees

The Washington Nationals said so on Monday Dr. Anthony Fauci – the nation’s leading infectious disease expert and self-described fan of reigning World Series champions – will kick the pitch out on opening day when the team hosts the New York Yankees on Thursday night.

“Dr. Fauci has been a true champion for our country throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and throughout his career, so it’s only fitting that we honor him when we start the 2020 season and defend our World Cup title.” Nationals tweeted.

The Major league baseball season has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The league’s spring training was discontinued in March due to the outbreak, but the teams resumed their preparations this month. The Nationals-Yankees matchup begins on Thursday at 7:08 p.m. ET.

There will be no fans on Opening Day at Nationals Park, and according to CBS Sports, there will be a game between the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The MLB season was shortened to 60 games.

Fauci, who is a leading member of the White House Coronavirus Working Groupwas sighted on a Nationals theme in June Protective mask while testifying on Capitol Hill.
