Here are five observations from the first day of the Detroit Tigers summer camp in Comerica Park on Friday afternoon:

1. Michael Fulmer

Fulmer, who sees himself rehabilitated by a reconstruction of the right elbow band in March last year, threw a short bullpen session on the Comerica Park hill. But when he took off his training uniform to run sprints afterwards, the real story surfaced: even from a distance, you could tell the definition in Fulmer’s arms; it seems to be in great shape.

2. Matt Manning

He also dropped the hill. Manning, arguably the Tigers’ best pitching expert, looked at the part of the hill he was supposed to drop in the coming years.

He was the only top prospect thrown on Friday, but he stood out among others for his physical shape, which seems to have limitless potential as a starter at the forefront.

3. Casey Mize and Matthew Boyd

Mize, number 1 in the MLB draft for 2018, seems to have found a like-minded training partner in Boyd. The two talked while warming up and then ran laps around the outer field. Every tiger that follows Boyd’s leadership is smart.

4. The catchers practiced punching exercises

The tiger’s catch harvest required striking exercises, including Grayson Greiner, Jake Rogers and Eric Haase. The first days of the camp will mostly be based on jugs and catchers.

5. Miguel Cabrera too

Cabrera appeared on the field with several other position players, including midfielder JaCoby Jones and outfielder Christin Stewart. Cabrera took some light turns and hit the ball on the opposite field. Expect him to sit back until the tigers start doing live punching exercises next week.
