Coyotes names Steve Sullivan as interim GM after John Chayka “quits”.

The Arizona Coyotes promoted Steve Sullivan to interim general manager after John Chayka quit as GM and president of the hockey business, the club said on Sunday.

SportsnetElliotte Friedman reported Sunday that Sullivan was promoted by the GM assistant and his position would be reevaluated after the playoffs.

“The club is disappointed with (Chayka’s) actions and timing as the Coyotes prepare to step into the NHL hub, Edmonton, where the team will begin the post-season game for the first time since 2012. Chayka chose to stop with a strong team and a competitive team, dedicated staff and Arizona Coyotes fans, the biggest fans in the NHL, ”the statement said.

“The club is moving forward and has appointed Steve Sullivan as interim general manager. He has the full support of the entire organization including team ownership, management, players and coaches. “

The Coyotes will play the Nashville Predators in their first playoff since 2012 as part of the NHL’s expanded post-season format.

On Saturday, Friedman reported that the relationship between Chayka and the Coyotes had broken up due to another job opportunity.

Chayka still had a four-year contract. He became the youngest GM in NHL history when the Coyotes promoted him to the position after previously serving as a deputy GM. During four seasons at the top of the club, the Coyotes set a record 131-147-38.
