Covid-19: four sponsors have terminated contracts with LOK for 680,000 euros

During the Covid-19 crisis, four cooperation partners have terminated agreements with the Latvian Olympic Committee (LOC), thus the committee’s budget will amount to 680,000 euros, the committee’s secretary general Georgis Tikmers told the TV channel TV3 program “900 seconds” on Friday.

He noted that at the forthcoming General Assembly of the LOC on Friday, one of the issues on the agenda will be the approval of the committee’s budget, which is planned to amount to more than eight million euros this year. However, the termination of contracts with four partners is precisely what worries Tikmer because of the Covid-19 crisis.

“In the revenue section, called ‘Sponsorship’, we estimate that the crisis has affected us by no more than EUR 680 000, minus. (..) The consequence is that we cannot fully realize the ideas we wanted,” explained Tikmer.

At the same time, he acknowledged that the sports industry received financial support from the state this year due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Asked whether they did not think it was the right time to re-evaluate the principles according to which those athletes who are the bearers of Latvia’s name in the world receive state and LOC support, Tikmers replied that changes are expected in this area. “Of course, only those who will be able to change will develop. The Latvian sports industry and, I think, the LOK will make the necessary changes in the coming years, of course, by carefully analyzing, preparing and thinking about them,” the secretary general promised.

He added that similar ideas were already included in the work program of the President and Secretary General of the LOC, which would be presented today at the forthcoming General Assembly of the Committee.

As reported, a session of the General Assembly of the LOC will take place in Riga on Friday, where it is planned to elect the leadership of the organization.

The General Assembly of the LOC will hold elections of individual members, the President of the LOC, the Secretary General, the Executive Committee, Vice-Presidents and members of the Audit Commission, as well as approve the 2019 report and the 2020 Revenue-Expenditure Estimate.

The members of the LOC have nominated 72 candidates for election as individual members, the President, the Secretary General, as well as members of the Executive Committee and the Audit Committee.

One candidate has been nominated for the position of LOK President – LOK Secretary General Tikmers, there is also one candidate for the position of LOK Secretary General – a member of the LOK Executive Committee and Kārlis Lejnieks, Secretary General of the Latvian Tennis Union.

40 candidates have been nominated as candidates for individual members of the LOC, 33 persons have been nominated for the positions of 19 members of the Executive Committee of the LOC, and nine candidates are applying for the positions of three members of the Audit Committee of the LOC.

After consultations with the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (SPC), it was decided to strengthen the epidemiological safety requirements for the members of the General Assembly of the SPC.

Persons who had attended the July 3 Congress of the Latvian Football Federation (LFF) at the Elektrum Olympic Center must take the Covid-19 test within the last two days before the General Assembly, and it must be negative. Only then is it allowed to attend a session of the General Assembly of the LOC.

All members of the LOK General Assembly will be required to complete a special Covid-19 related certification form, participants will be required to measure remote body temperature, maintain a distance of two meters and, if necessary, use disinfectants, personal protective masks and gloves.

Taking into account the Covid-19 containment and precautionary measures, only two authorized representatives of the LOC members – the Olympic Sports Federation and the Latvian Olympic Club – as well as the nominated candidates for election as individual members of the LOC will be able to participate in the LOC General Assembly session.

Since its resumption in 1988, the LOK has had two presidents. From 1988 to 2004, the president of LOK was Vilnis Baltiņš, but from 2004, the president of LOK is Aldons Vrubļevskis.
