Chiefs strike deal with ex-Seahawks Safety Tedric Thompson

Free Agent Safety Tedric Thompson has signed a contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, his agent announced Tuesday night.

Agent David Canter made the announcement on Instagram:

Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Thompson becomes the second veteran free agent added by the Chiefs on the eve of training camp, joining guard Kelechi Osemele, who accepted a contract with the team after Laurent Duvernay-Tardif retired from the 2020 season.

Thompson is providing insurance to the Chiefs safely, Juan Thornhill recovering from a torn ACL he suffered last December.

The Seattle Seahawks gave up on Thompson on May 31 with a failed physical designation. His 2019 season ended after six games with a shoulder injury that required labral surgery.

Thompson, 25, was a fourth-round pick by Seattle in 2017 and has had some ups and downs in 16 starts over the past two seasons after taking over from Earl Thomas in free safety.

He made interceptions in critical moments in back-to-back wins in October, but also had gaps in coverage that resulted in long completions, including a 50-yard dash in the Seahawks’ loss to Baltimore that coach Pete Carroll lamented it as a “big mistake”.

Thompson was no longer planning as a free safety starter for the Seahawks with Quandre Diggs taking over the position.

The Chiefs safety depth chart is featured by safety star Tyrann Mathieu and includes veterans Thornhill and Daniel Sorensen. Kansas City also selected rookie L’Jarius Sneed in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Brady Henderson of ESPN contributed to this report.
