Chefs and DT star Chris Jones sign four-year deal of up to $ 85 million, sources say

Kansas City leaders and defensive forward Chris Jones have reached a four-year deal, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

According to sources, the $ 80 million contract includes:

  • $ 37 million, due at signing;

  • $ 60 million guaranteed for injury;

  • $ 5 million in incentives, bringing the value of the contract to $ 85 million.

The Chiefs and Jones, who received the team’s franchise tag, had until Wednesday’s deadline to accept a long-term contract.

Earlier this month, in tweeting a response to an NFL Network video about his contract negotiations, Jones had hinted that he would hang on unless he got a long-term deal.

Jones, 26, has led the Chiefs in sacks in each of the past two seasons.

He predicted at training camp in 2018 that he would lead the league in sacks and although he did not, he approached. Jones’ 15.5 bags were third in the league behind Aaron Donald and JJ Watt. Jones this season has established an NFL record for consecutive games with a sack with 11.

He had 9 sacks in 2019 despite three missed games with a groin injury. He was selected to play in the Pro Bowl for the first time.

Jones failed to save a sack in the Super Bowl LIV but still played a big part in the Chiefs’ victory. His pressure on 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo forced an interception in the second quarter. Jones also eliminated three assists from Garoppolo.

Jones did not participate in training and offseason training for the Chiefs last year in hopes of obtaining a contract extension. This did not happen and Jones showed up on time for training camp. He played the season in the final year of the contract he signed in 2016 as the Mississippi State Chiefs draft pick.

He has 33 sacks, 2 interceptions and 7 forced fumbles in 61 career games.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Chris Mortensen and Adam Teicher contributed to this report.
