Also next season, teams will receive 5 substitutions per game football

The IFAB (International Football Association Board) has extended the rule to allow 5 substitutes per football match until the summer of 2021. The rule was introduced in early May to absorb the corona impact on the field.

The rule to allow 5 substitutions per game was introduced on May 8 due to the corona crisis. FIFA, the world football association, already proposed to maintain the rule until the end of the 2021 season, but still needed the green light from the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which manages the rules.

And that green light also came. “The IFAB Board of Directors has extended the option of 5 substitutions for leagues ending before July 31, 2021 and for international leagues scheduled for July / August 2021,” IFAB said in a statement.

At the European Championship next year, there is therefore the possibility of 5 substitutions, although the choice lies with the European Football Confederation UEFA, just like for the Champions League and Europa League.

The choice to effectively apply this rule in competitions remains the individual choice of each national football association itself.
