Alessandro Zanardi in rehab clinic relocated after handbike accident

KJust five weeks after his handbike accident, former Formula 1 driver Alessandro Zanardi was transferred from the hospital to a special rehabilitation facility for brain injuries. As the hospital in Siena in Tuscany announced, the 53-year-old was taken to a neuro rehabilitation center on Tuesday. Previously, the doctors at Zanardi, who had been in an artificial coma since his accident on June 19 and had undergone three operations because of his head and face injuries, had slowly shut down the anesthetic. The hospital did not say whether Zanardi was approachable or conscious.

After Zanardi’s third operation on July 6, it was said that his condition remained serious from a neurological point of view, and the prognoses were subdued. “Our specialists are still available to this exceptional person and their family for the further stages of clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic development,” said Clinic Director Valtere Giovannini now.

Former Formula 1 driver Zanardi had lost control of his hand bike at a competition in Tuscany and collided with a truck. Because the race was not officially registered due to the Corona crisis, cars drove on the street. The Siena public prosecutor is currently investigating the Zanardis handbike and the course of the accident.

Zanardi had lost both legs in an accident at the Lausitzring in 2001. At the time, the doctors described his survival as a miracle. He struggled back into competitive sports. Zanardi also competed in DTM races and won four gold medals at the Paralympics. Many Italians have been keeping their fingers crossed for the “fighter” Zanardi since the accident. The Pope also sent wishes for recovery.
