AFF Cup Postponed Next Year

AFF 2020 Cup is postponed next year. Acting Secretary (Acting) PSSI Secretary General Yunus Nusi who revealed the postponement of the Southeast Asian countries soccer party.

The biennial tournament should be held on November 23 to December 31, 2020. The location of the event was changed with Vietnam being the host due to adjustments to COVID-19 conditions.

Vietnam’s plan to host as well as a substitute for the format of the previous location. In the 2018 edition of the AFF Cup, each team played two home games twice in the group phase.

But Vietnam’s plan to host reconsider after the AFF held an emergency meeting on Monday (7/27/2020). The option taken by the AFF after the meeting was the transfer of administration to 2021.

The AFF Emergency Committee will again hold a meeting to finalize the decision of the AFF Cup fate. Yunus Nusi confirmed that the tournament will be moved to 2021, but the certainty of the new organizing time will be taken at the next emergency meeting.

“Yesterday (AFF) asked Indonesia (the AFF Cup) to move to February or March (2021). But we are preparing for the World Cup (U-20 2021) and close to Eid al-Fitr too (12/13 May 2021),” Yunus said Nusi told reporters on Wednesday (29/7).

“So yesterday the new date of the AFF Cup has not been decided when, there will still be a meeting when about the right time. Because when offered to Indonesia, from PSSI that the first option for February-March was fasting (April 12-13),” he added .

“Secondly, we are also focusing on the preparation of the World Cup. Yes, it is canceled, but when it will not be done. It will be confirmed on the 30th (July) meeting again,” he said.

Yunus Nusi said that PSSI did not give a proposal when the AFF Cup should be held. He made sure he would follow the AFF’s decision.

However, with the condition that the AFF Cup does not clash with the important agenda of PSSI namely the 2021 U-20 World Cup and do not coincide with Ramadan and Eid.

“Not yet to give an option, it all depends on them. Whether before or after the World Cup, it’s up to them,” said the man who is also the Chairperson of the East Kalimantan PSSI Provincial Association (Asprov).

“Because they are still talking to other countries. Just wait for the 30th. My staff will join the meeting later because I want to go home, Eid (Eid al-Adha),” he concluded.
