Adebayor: Former Arsenal star leaves Olimpia due to travel complications

The Togolese striker and the Paraguayan club have agreed to separate as the pandemic continues to rage in South America

Former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor has ended his time at Olimpia after both clubs have reached an agreement to terminate his contract due to health concerns related to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The 36-year-old moved to the Paraguayan capital in February after leaving the Turkish club Kayserispor in December 2019.

Adebayor’s arrival in Asuncion was met with great interest due to his profile and the influence of Roque Santa Cruz, who had previously been teammates in Manchester City.

The Lome-born man played four games in the Paraguayan Primera Division and Copa Libertadores until football was interrupted in March when Covid-19 became a serious global health risk.

South America is one of the virus’ hotspots, with more than two million confirmed cases, more than half of which are in neighboring Paraguay and in Brazil, the largest nation on the continent.

Paraguay has more than 2,000 cases with 17 deaths and more than 1,000 recoveries.

“The Board of Directors of Club Olimpia informs its members, fans and the general public that it has been mutually agreed to terminate the contractual relationship with player Emmanuel Adebayor,” said the club’s statement on its Twitter account.

“The pandemic situation due to the Covid 19 virus poses a health risk for the player to start his return to our country with multiple flights, scales and quarantine measures, in addition to the high logistical costs and the economic situation of the country, which Olimpia is not escaping us to make the best decision to protect our institution’s legacy and ensure relative economic stability for the rest of the year, continuing our victorious journey.

“We thank Mr. Emmanuel for the trust, we are very proud that he has gone through the history of the club with his enviable sports career. We wish him every success in his future.
