The Tampa Bay Rays on Twitter have called for the arrest of officials involved in the deadly shootout Breonna Taylor, a black emergency technician who was killed by the police in March. The team tweeted on Friday morning: “Today is opening day, which means it is a great day to arrest the Breonna Taylor killers.”
The team tracked the tweet and announced a $ 100,000 donation to local groups. The contribution, which will run annually, is to “build power in communities that have been historically overlooked and targeted at systematic racism”.
Organizations include NAACP’s Hillsborough County Branch, Tampa, Inc.’s Corporation to Develop Communities, and Pinellas County Urban League, which provides residents with economic empowerment and educational opportunities.
Taylor, 26, was fatally shot by the police on March 25 during a drug raid while sleeping at her home in Louisville. The police found no narcotics during the search.
None of the three officials involved was charged. One of the officers, Sergeant Brett Hankison, was released by the Louisville police. The other two, Myles Cosgrove and Jonathan Mattingly, were taken on administrative leave.
Kentucky attorney general Daniel Cameron is investigating the case, but Taylor activists and supporters believe the investigation is not going fast enough.
