62 9-under-par blisters earn medal honors at Girls Junior State Amateur

Macomb Township’s Ariel Chang fired a fiery 62 under-par on Wednesday in the second round of the Michigan Girls Junior State Amateur Championship to earn medals and lead a 16-player field in the match match.

Chang, who will be a senior in Utica Eisenhower, made two eagles and five birds at Forest Akers East in East Lansing to finish six huge shots ahead of first-round co-leader Sophie Stevens of Highland.

Last month’s GAM Junior Kickoff Championship girls winner Chang finished the stroke play part of the event with an 8-under 72-62—140 score after shooting 31 out of every nine in the second round when he didn’t bogey.

Stevens shot a couple of the 70s to finish a shot in front of the Canton’s first round co-leader Adie Maki, who fired 70-71—141. Canton’s Bridget Boczar was fourth at 72-70-1414 and Nicole Whatley of Mount Pleasant was fifth at 71-72-143.

Reigning Grand Rapids champion Lilia Henkel also advanced the game by drawing for the sixth with a score of 74-71—145.

Thursday will be played two rounds of games with semi-finals and championship games scheduled on Friday, weather permitting.

In division 15 and under, Rockford’s Jessica Jolly was the medal after a 2-under 69 2nd round score gave her a total of 36 holes of 1-under 141. This was good for a two-man victory. shoot Mia Melendez Ann Arbor and Laura Timpf of Macomb.

Jolly, who scored the only sub-70 score during stroke in his division, will bring eight players of 15 and under into the game starting Thursday.
