49ers Place RB Jeff Wilson Jr. on COVID / Reserve List; give up Alex Barrett and Leonard Wester

According to Albert Breer’s latest COVID / Reserve list, the San Francisco 49ers have added running back Jeff Wilson Jr. to the COVID / Reserve list. Again, that doesn’t mean Wilson Jr. necessarily tested positive for COVID. He could have been exposed to someone with a positive test. There is no time limit that a player must be on the roster, and I’m fascinated by how many teams use it to hide players.

Obviously, you want every player to be healthy. I don’t want to belittle the health of Wilson Jr. or Richie James. That said, they’re both part of the roster bubble, which gives the 49ers a way to keep them both on the squad. It was just a thought that came with a few friends as we were discussing different loopholes that teams could use. This is a flawed argument, however, as the only way to get on the list is to test positive or be exposed to a known COVID carrier.

The 49ers also gave up on DL Alex Barrett and released OL Leonard Wester. The team currently has 79 players on its active roster. You’re cleared into training camp with 80 players, so could a Damontre Moore signing be on the horizon?
