tennis championships should have started on Monday (June 29) had it not been for the COVID-19 pandemic." data-reactid="73">HISTORY: The Wimbledon tennis championships should have started on Monday (June 29th) if the COVID-19 pandemic hadn’t happened.
For the first time since World War II, the novel corona virus forced the only Grand Slam to be canceled on the grass field.
Tennis Club (AELTC) announced on April 1 that it was impossible for the tournament, scheduled for June 29-July 12, to take place." data-reactid="75">The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) announced on April 1 that the tournament could not be held from June 29 to July 12.
Unlike the French Open, which is played on clay, Wimbledon’s scope for reorganizing the start date was extremely limited.
tennis outside on grass would have been extremely challenging in late summer or autumn with a lack of light and problems caused by dew forming on the surface late in the day." data-reactid="77">While Center Court and Court One have a roof, playing elite tennis outdoors on grass in late summer or autumn would have been a major challenge because of the lack of light and problems from surface dew formation late in the day arise.
Shortening the tournament format or playing behind closed doors would also have been extremely unpopular with the players.
Wimbledon has been held annually since 1946 after a six-year hiatus because the country was at war.
The newly planned French Open was postponed for the first time to September 20 to October 20. 4 slot, but the main draw now begins on September 27 and ends on October 11.
This means there is more space between the end of the US Open on September 13th and the main draw of the French Open.
The US Open will be held without fans and do not include a draw in qualifying.
The men’s ATP tour will continue on August 14th with the ATP 500 event Citi Open in Washington, DC, while the first WTA event will take place on August 3rd in Palermo, Italy.
After the Citi Open, the Cincinnati Masters 1000 will take place in Flushing Meadows, followed by the US Open.
The men’s clay court swing begins on September 8th in Kitzbühel, Austria, and overlaps with the second week of the US Open. The players then have more time on sand at the Madrid and Italian Open ahead of Roland Garros.
The WTA announced 20 tournaments, starting in Palermo, ahead of Cincinnati (played at Flushing Meadows) and the US Open before moving into the sand of Madrid and Rome.
The WTA tour will then traverse Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, including the China Open in Beijing and the WTA finale at the end of the season in Shenzhen, which runs from November 9th to 15th.
