Williams was already thinking of possible sales before the corona crisis

June 27, 2020 – Williams’ Formula 1 team has been getting the team back on track for a long time. After a loss of millions in 2019, it was decided to sell the team partly or completely. That seemed to be a direct result of the corona crisis, but the sales plans have been on the table for some time now.

On Friday, Williams announced its new livery with which they will be in action in the 2020 season. The new paint job was needed after main sponsor ROKiT decided to leave and possibly go shopping with the neighbors. A new setback for the traditional racing stable, after only one World Cup point was collected last year and the team suffered a loss of millions.

A few weeks ago it was announced that Williams would go on sale. In an interview with Coach deputy team principal Claire Williams tells that the Grove stable was already busy with the possible sale of the team long before the corona pandemic. “We started thinking about new investments late last year, long before the corona crisis,” said Williams. “We realized that if we ever wanted to get back to the top level, we wouldn’t make it with pure sponsorship deals and prize money.”

For Williams, team interests always come first, even if that means that the family should relinquish control of the stable. “The overarching interest is the best possible outcome for the team. If that means that we have to put the racing stable on sale, partly or completely, it is. If new owners come in and want to continue working with us, that is of course also fine. We can continue to rake the money together slowly, but we did that for too long. It’s time for a change, “Williams concludes.
