Unpopular Opinion Alert: Niners Should Leave Jimmy G

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The most handsome man in football is just not a great QB, and a new era of football has appeared where more and more young quarters are available each year, which are simply good to excellent. While Jimmy G is good enough to give you a chance to win a ring, it has a pretty obvious cap, and Shanahan obviously is dramatically increasing production in the Niners system. That’s good and quite a point, but imagine having a guy who has a unique talent outside of an offensive system suddenly pair up with Shanahan – the sky is the limit, as we saw firsthand with Reid / Mahomes.

Finally, the incredible value of having a guy with a rookie should not be underestimated, nor have a 5-10 top-quarter that you would willingly sacrifice a huge portion of your cap space to keep. Instead, we are stuck in a no man’s land with an intermediate level QB occupying a giant part of the cap space. It’s honestly one of the worst places in the NFL QB: Jimmy is good enough for you to win with him, but not enough to raise offense or the team around him.

Now for the super unpopular opinion: swap Jimmy and Warner (hopefully, get a pair of 2nd) as well as Ford and Kwon (2nd and 3rd sound on the right) and “tank” the 2020 season (probably still 8-8 with CJ or Mullens at the head of this team, maybe even bring back Kap), sign Kittle for an extension and swap the farm to go up in the top 5 to take Lawrence or Fields or Lance. This is what is best for the team in the long term and gives us a chance at an elite attack with a unique talented QB combined with Shanahan’s offense.
