Toto Wolff expects Renault, Racing Point and McLaren to lead the way in Austria

Mercedes and Red Bull Racing are regarded as the top two contenders for the 2020 title, while Ferrari is not sure how strong this year will be. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, however, thinks Racing Point, Renault and McLaren could cause a shock next week in Austria. Wolff expects the three mentioned teams to compete in the front of the field.

Racing Point, Renault and McLaren, who often grabbed midfield points last year, are all cautiously optimistic that they have taken clear steps forward.

Pink Mercedes

Probably Racing Point has made the most profit with their pink Mercedes and Wolff thinks these three teams can mess up the Red Bull Ring chances.

“I think it’s always a risk to assume that what you see during testing will also be performance during the racing season. Looking back at 2019 and what happened next in Australia, it was completely different.”

“So we were on our way to Australia this year and didn’t expect an easy weekend there, but quite a bit of competition. You could see the eagerness of some team members in the room to race because they thought they had a great car. In that regard, I have no doubt it will be the common names. There may be some surprises. I think Racing Point has a very strong car and has shown promising lap times in Barcelona. I have no doubt that McLaren and Renault will play a role in Austria, ” he said on an F1 vodcast.

“Just wait. I am always on the cautious side. I think we have a first indication at 3pm on Saturday afternoon and then we’ll see on Sunday who has the best package to win.”
