Timmy Simons: “The perfect step in my trainer career”
Until a few weeks ago, Timmy Simons was still active as a youth coach at “his” Club Brugge, but he could not miss this opportunity with Zulte Waregem.
“Suddenly discussions started because Zulte Waregem was looking for an assistant,” says Simons. “I think that is the perfect step in my trainer career.”
“My ambition is to become a head coach someday, or I will succeed is another story. Within how many years we will see, because you also have to get results to achieve that. Also at which club I could be head coach remains to be seen. Domestic and abroad can do both, timing when a position becomes available will be especially important. “
Francky Dury is the ideal teacher.
Did it hurt to leave Club Brugge? “Sometimes it is necessary to go away for a while to return again, who knows, like Philippe Clement. I have spent almost half of my career in Bruges, of course you will not just leave that behind. But it is a step that you have to move in order to grow. “
“I am having fun here at Zulte Waregem. I still played together with Davy De fauw and Jelle Vossen. I also know Olivier Deschacht well, that makes integration a little easier. Every now and then we hand out some stitches, which is a laugh.”
What type of trainer is Timmy Simons? “I try to set the right accents at the right times. Francky Dury is the ideal teacher. We discuss everything before and during the training and he has tons of experience, but also leaves a lot of freedom. Everyone has their own angle and that is a good thing. mix. Davy De fauw: “It had been playing in my head for a few years”
Davy De fauw played his last game in early March with Zulte Waregem, a 7-0 pawn on the field of Anderlecht. “At the time, I didn’t know it was my last match, now I’m especially happy to be able to fulfill this new role as an assistant.”
“It’s a lot of fun. The boys know me, of course, but this is a very different role. I don’t miss being on the field myself, because in principle I still do that. When I see the players walk, I miss I don’t, for example. And if I want him to kick a ball, I do. “
“Becoming an assistant had been in my head for a few years. I watched season by season and I might want to do something with the youth. Suddenly this opportunity came and you just have to take it.”
How does the collaboration with Timmy Simons work? “Very good. We have the same vision and above all the same drive. Communication with Francky Dury is also very open.”
“My trainer career will go step by step. Of course you want to do the best you can. I want to experience this first of all. Who knows, I might not like it, but at the moment I am having a bad time.”
