Robbie Fowler will not be returning to Brisbane Roar

Robbie Fowler has ended his tenure as head coach of Brisbane Roar in the Australian A-League.

The former Liverpool and England striker returned home with his assistant Tony Grant in March when the league was banned due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Roar’s vice chairman, Chris Fong, said Monday that 45-year-old Fowler does not currently want to be separated from his family in England and will not resume his coaching duties.

“We are disappointed that the global pandemic has influenced our plans together, but fully understand that the family comes first in these difficult times,” said Fong.

“Robbie not only ensured stability, but also a refreshing injection of knowledge and insight into the roar.

“The world has changed, we never expected that. It’s a shame because the way we built was beautiful.”

Fowler, who played for North Queensland Fury and Perth Glory towards the end of his A-League career, joined Brisbane in April 2019 as head coach with a two-year contract.

Brisbane had ended last season in second place from the bottom, but Fowler led the club to fourth place in the A-League table of 11 teams with 10 wins from 22 games when the league was suspended.

“On behalf of me and Tony, I would like to thank the club for the opportunity and the Brisbane Roar fans for the warm welcome and support for me and the team,” said Fowler in a statement. “We are very proud of what we have achieved.”

The A-League will resume behind closed doors on July 16. The regular season will be completed by the end of August.
