“Racing Point / McLaren / Renault competitors in Austria”

Release date: June 28, 2020

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff believes that Racing Point, Renault and McLaren could force a shock result at the season opener in Austria.

Mercedes and Red Bull are considered the two best candidates for the 2020 title, while Ferrari has an unknown size.

But Racing Point, Renault and McLaren, who often led the midfield last year, are all still optimistic that they have taken clear steps forward.

Racing Point was probably the most profitable with its ‘pink Mercedes’ and Wolff could see that these three teams messed up the chances at the Red Bull Ring.

“I think it’s always a risk to assume that what you see testing will be performance on the track. If you look back at 2019 and then what happened in Australia, it was completely different, ”he said in an F1 vodcast quoted by Motorsport.com.

“So we went to Australia [this year] I don’t expect an easy run there, but a lot of competition. You could see the zeal of some in the room [when the event cancellation was discussed] Racing because they felt they had a great car.

“So I have no doubt that it will be the usual suspects. Perhaps with some surprises – I think Racing Point has a very strong car and showed promising lap times in Barcelona. I have no doubt that McLaren and Renault will play a role.

“So wait and see. I am always one on the careful side. I think we will have a first clue on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. and then on Sunday we will see who got the best package. “
