New restrictions will not slow down F1 pit stops

As part of the protocols introduced as part of the coronavirus pandemic, teams had to reduce the number of people they were allowed to run.

An overall limit on the number of people allowed to work on the car has been replaced by a limit on the total number of team members at the event – with a cap of 80.

To limit the spread of the corona virus when a team member is infected, teams like Ferrari have also built their own social bubbles in their squads – with the crews of both cars separated as much as possible.

The complications make it difficult for team members to work closely together, and garage work is expected to take longer than before.

However, Mekies believes the teams will be as quick at pit stops as ever.

“We now have overalls [personnel] The previously non-existent limit of 80 people in total, “said Mekies.” So we mainly had to cut off non-technical people. As a result, the pit stop and engineering operations are not as badly affected.

“They are a bit affected because we have tried to bring as few people as possible onto the racetrack through global responsibility, regardless of the limit. Overall, however, the number of people involved in pit stops or operations will not change significantly.

“We reduced the number to do as many things as possible remotely. As you know, we have what we call the “parallel box” here [at Ferrari], the secluded garage that supports our operations. Everything we can do is done remotely. I am sure that the other teams feel the same way as the FIA

“But when it comes to pit stops, you will see the same operation there.”
