NBA 2K20 Edit provides insight into Jersey’s name replacement for social justice

On Saturday, Athletic’s Shams Charania reported that the NBA and the NBA Players Association had agreed to allow players to change the names on the back of their jerseys to statements that relate to social justice amidst the issues of brutality Police against African Americans and systemic racism in the United States.

These jerseys will be worn as soon as the regular NBA season starts again in July since they were closed by the coronavirus pandemic in March. Since then, the problem of racial inequality has erupted, and some NBA players have expressed concern that the league will restart the games and that the ongoing struggle for civil rights will be pushed aside for entertainment.

This decision was made to ensure that NBA players can continue to use their platforms to express their views on social injustice.

We don’t know what terms are selected by players, but if you’re wondering what this might look like on the court, the game editor in NBA 2K20 can offer a preview.

The picture above shows a changed jersey name for the star of the Los Angeles Lakers and one of the most socially conscious athletes of this generation, LeBron James, with the statement “more than one voice” on his back. James was a supporter of suppression of voters and posted pictures like the following on his Instagram account:

Another socially conscious NBA star who will also be in Orlando when the NBA restarts its season with 22 teams is Chris Paul from Oklahoma City Thunder. He is the president of the NBA Players Association and could be one of the stars who choose to use his platform for the cause.

The NBA has again proven to be a leader in social issues, and the customization options in NBA 2K again offer the flexibility that runs parallel to the league it emulates.
