Mikel Arteta’s decision is a reality check for Matteo Guendouzi at Arsenal

Former Liverpool captain Jamie Redknapp launched a fervent defense of Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi after a week in which he met with anger of criticism.

The 21-year-old midfielder fled the Premier League punishment for his clash with Brighton striker Neal Maupay following the Gunners’ defeat against the Seagulls.

Guendouzi was criticized for his apparent words towards his countryman, who reportedly oriented himself towards pay, which was considered gross.

However, Redknapp declined to criticize the young midfielder for those actions while saying that these things are happening at the height of the moment.

“Matteo Guendouzi was not part of the Arsenal team again yesterday, but I refuse to hammer the 21-year-old for his speeches against Brighton,” he wrote in the Daily Mail.

“Apparently he brought out money with Neal Maupay. He is rough, rude, but it happens. It has happened since the day you play football and it will always happen.

“I made comments too. ‘Who are you? Turn around and show me your name because I have no idea who you are.’

“Everything is said in the heart of the moment. A player says something that he later regrets.

“So slaughtering Guendouzi for sledding, borrowing the term of cricket, is unfair.

“He is not the first to do it, he will not be the last. I would prefer to focus on his performances. If you want to act like a great player, play as such.

“We hope to be dropped by Mikel Arteta as a reality check and he learns from it.”
