The Mercedes Formula 1 team is entering the season with a black instead of a gray car. The German racing team decided to change the livery of world champions Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas in protest of racism and discrimination. The drivers will also wear black racing clothing.
“We are introducing our new color scheme for 2020. This is a promise to enhance diversity within our team and our sport, and a signal that we are committed to fighting racism and discrimination in any form,” Mercedes wrote in a photo of the black colored car.
Hamilton and Bottas will take to the track for the first time in Austria on Friday with this new color scheme. Then are the first trainings for the Grand Prix of Austria, which opens the Formula 1 season on Sunday. The season was supposed to start in Australia in early March, but that was canceled due to the corona crisis.
