Liverpool breaks the nine-year transfer record as overall net spending is tiny compared to its rivals

Liverpool is the first Premier League champion to spend less than £ 10m on transfers in the season in which he won the league for nine years after spending just £ 8.6m during his title campaign.

The Reds took the 2019/20 title – their 19th overall Premier League win but a premiere in the Premier League era – when Chelsea defeated their closest challenger Manchester City on Stamford Bridge last Thursday.

This led to wild celebrations in the squad that gathered to watch the game on Merseyside.

Among them were the Japanese attacking midfielder Takumi Minamino, for whom the Reds spent £ 7.25 million in January, and the young defender Sepp van den Berg, who was signed by the Dutch PEC Zwolle last summer for £ 1.35 million.

The couple who have only played five Premier League games this season, all Minamino players, are the only players Liverpool have spent money on last year.

Goalkeeper Adrian and Andy Lonergan also arrived with free transfers, while Harvey Elliott’s fee has not yet been fixed, as Fulham will take the Reds to a tribunal for a price for the youngster.

This makes Liverpool’s title winning season the least expensive – at least in terms of transfer fees – since Manchester United won the league in 2010/11 after spending just £ 6.3m on the campaign, according to Premier League Productions.

Sir Alex Ferguson picked up greats like Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez this summer before winning his 12th and penultimate Premier League titles.

Since then, every other Premier League winner has spent over £ 60m, apart from Leicester’s £ 27.3m in the 2015/16 season.

The low fees from Liverpool go hand in hand with the incredibly low net expenses during the time of Jürgen Klopp, who is responsible for drawing a healthy transfer picture in the club.

As The Athletic explains in detail, the Reds’ net transfer expenditures in the past five years have totaled £ 92.4m less than that of Brighton & Hove Albion, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Watford.

Over the same period, Manchester City’s net expenditure was around £ 505.6 million and Manchester United’s net expenditure was £ 378.9 million.
