In the future, national football matches are likely to be played without spectators

Meiers explained in a conversation with the news agency DPA that a final decision has not yet been made within UEFA in this regard, but there is a high possibility that fans will not be able to watch the national team matches. He emphasized that despite the situation in the country, fans and also federations would have to comply with the requirements set by UEFA and not by the government. This will apply to every country, including Serbia and Belarus.

“The UEFA competition is controlled by the organization’s regulations. The above-mentioned countries will also not be allowed to let fans into the stadiums if the game is controlled by UEFA,” said Meiers, who expressed hope that a final decision on the matter could be made soon.

However, the head of the medical commission was much more positive about the UEFA Champions and European League matches scheduled for Portugal and Germany, respectively. Meiers pointed out that this competition is easier to control, because the games take place in one place and a certain number of teams will come to them. The diametrically opposite situation is in the Cup of Nations.

“If the tournament takes place in one place, it is quite easy to control, but if there are 55 teams in the competition, there are several difficulties. These are related to the restrictions set in the country, and it is not known whether laboratories will be available,” Meier was concerned.

Meier pointed out that the example of the German Bundesliga is a good one, but regular testing throughout the season is not possible.

“I am sure we will get a vaccine that will allow the stadiums to be filled again, but this is unlikely to happen so soon,” the official said. “We still don’t know what the second wave of the pandemic will be. There must be a plan in place to take action if the virus breaks out again.”

The agency LETA has already reported that the first game of the Latvian national football team in the UEFA League of Nations 2020/2021 season will be at home against Andorra on September 3 this year.

Next, the Latvian national team will go to Malta, where it will meet with local footballers on September 6.

In the next term, on October 10, Latvia will visit the Faroe Islands and host Malta on October 13. In the last games of the group, domestic footballers will host the Faroe Islands on November 14 and visit Andorra on November 17.

Latvia, led by Dainis Kazakevich, will compete in the first group of the UEFA Nations League League D, the winner of which will secure a place in next season’s League C, or in the third level by force. The weakest national teams play in the D league.

As reported, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Latvian national team did not carry out the planned test matches against Montenegro (March 26) and San Marino (March 31).
