Damon Hill is concerned about Sebastian Vettel’s situation at Ferrari. In a podcast of ‘Autosport’ he talks about the possible end of the career of the fourfold world champion.

“Vettel’s situation is worrying,” said Damon Hill, immediately pounding into an open door. Vettel is in fact facing an extremely difficult season because it is already certain that he will no longer be a Ferrari driver in 2021.

Hill wonders aloud where Vettel should go now because with the available places in mind he can only go downhill.

“If you are at the top it is difficult because the only way is down.”

If Vettel made the decision to quit it wouldn’t make things any easier and it could be in his head.

When Hill compares it to the end of his own career in 1999, he describes it as follows: “When I had made up my mind, I wanted to quit immediately.”

“Knowing that you have to finish five races is very difficult. When a rider sees the red light he has to stop and I think that’s right. If you no longer feel it as a racer, you should not continue until the end of the season, then just stop. ”

A good example of knowing when to stop is Jackie Stewart. When his teammate and friend François Cevert died in a crash, the three-time world champion did not start in his last race, but it would have been his hundredth.

“He just knew when to stop,” said Hill.

Niki Lauda also told his team boss Bernie Ecclestone in 1979 after the free practice sessions for the Canadian GP that he wanted to stop immediately and it happened.

“They know how the world works and how things work in Formula 1, business or politics. You have to know when you want to quit,” Hill concludes.
