Football. George Weah. When a footballer becomes president

He was an Italian champion, French champion, won the FA Cup. He was the best in the world. In 1995 he won the FIFA Footballer of the Year classification and the Golden Ball. He achieved the biggest victory in December 2017. He was elected president of Liberia.

Liberia, a country with a beautiful name, depressing history and nightmare reality. It was created thanks to the dream of the lofty idea of freedom for the slaves oppressed in the 19th century in the United States. On this small patch of the African coast, liberators from America settled and lived with the local people.

American heritage has survived in the national flag, which is a replica of American stars and stripes, with one star in the upper left corner and the monetary unit – the Liberian dollar. But not only. The liberators imitated the style of the American South – in architecture, way of life, but also in the social system. American-Liberians created a colonial system. They became the authority that accumulated wealth only in their own hands and dominated economically over local subjects. This model has survived to modern times and has plunged the country into a great economic crisis, extreme poverty, corruption and unimaginable violence.

Georghe Weah is only the second president of Liberia since 1822, who comes from outside the current elite, from one of the local tribal groups and not from the liberators from the United States. Instead, he is the first president raised in the slums of the Monrovia ghetto.

He was born in Gibraltar, one of the largest poor districts of the Liberian capital. Located on the coastal lagoon, but in the surrounding streams and rivers, not water flows, but rubbish and sewage. Today, 85 thousand live in the slums of Gibraltar people, in houses with sheet metal roofs, without windows and doors. Part of his distant family still lives in the house where the current president lived. Weaha was raised by my grandmother. He fought for survival every day. To survive, he repaired phones and did minor technical work.
