While tensions between CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie and the players continue to grow because of a lack of communication about a COVID-shortened CFL season, Toronto Argonauts recipient DaVaris Daniels has put an end to the gauntlet run.
“I’ll give you until July 3rd,” Daniels wrote cryptically on Twitter, marking the contested commissioner. Many players have requested increased communication and a fixed deadline for canceling the season. Daniels seems to have one in mind and other players have jumped on board.
“Not a day later,” wrote former All-Star star Anthony Orange, while Edmonton recipient Ricky Collins Jr. simply “Same !!!!” replied. Fellow Argo Juwan Brescacin emphasized the tone of the tweet with a rigid gif response.
It is unclear what Daniels will do if his deadline is exceeded, but Montreal, which James Wilder Jr. is returning, has retired this week due to similar concerns over economic uncertainty. There has been a lot of speculation that he won’t be the last prominent player looking for other career opportunities.
Brian Ramsay, CFLPA Executive Director, asked Commissioner Randy Ambrosie not to have any concrete ideas about a collective agreement or how to get into the field this year amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The CFLPA informed its union membership that collective bargaining has started with the league. From a club note:
We were officially invited to sit down with the CFL to “participate in the CBA negotiations with the CFLPRC, quoted from the CFL letter, to work with us on a COVID recovery plan that addresses 2021 and beyond and possibly also changes to collective agreements, should there be a shortened season in 2020. “
The regular CFL season should start on Thursday June 11th, but Commissioner Randy Ambrosie has said so The league could play again for a shortened season in September at the earliest. The final decision as to whether this actually happens depends, of course, on what government and health officials consider safe for gamers and fans.
