Sheffield United has been terrible since the restart, but it was still a wonderful season for them and their man among the sticks, Dean Henderson.
The young man is expected to return to Manchester United’s parent club at the end of the campaign, where he will challenge David De Gea to be number 1.
The replacement of De Gea would have been considered unthinkable to Old Trafford once, but his form in the last 12-18 months is worrying.
So there is a real opportunity for Henderson to make a name for himself in one of the best European clubs in the 2020/21 campaign, but there seem to be other options to think about.
talkSPORT.com outlines the four options available for Henderson this summer.
De Gea challenge at Manchester United
Blades chief Chris Wilder has made it clear that Henderson sees playing for Man United as his long-term goal.
De Gea has been uneven throughout the season – his latest mistake came in the Red Devils’ draw at Tottenham while Steven Bergwijn’s shot, inexplicably, went straight through the Spaniard. Roy Keane didn’t take too well …
Going to Man United will increase control over Henderson but will also increase his profile, putting him in a much better position to make a senior first appearance in England.
Move to Chelsea
Henderson’s form reportedly attracted another Premier League team’s attention this season. Chelsea, who is reportedly willing to pay £ 50 million for him.
Like Man United, the Blues are also running out of patience with a Spanish goalkeeper. Kepa Arrizabalaga has also been inconsistent this season and has for some time been abandoned for Willy Caballero.
A move to Stamford Bridge would most likely make Henderson the first-choice keeper and Chelsea’s good form since restarting means that Champions League football next season seems likely. However, he is still hanging in the balance for Man United.
Move to Tottenham
If Henderson wants a more steady increase in the rankings, Spurs, who has also emerged as a contender to sign it, is an option for Henderson.
Playing for North London would further improve his profile, however, he should fight for his number 1 status with Hugo Lloris.
The Frenchman was contracted in North London until June 2022 and is subject to the strange mistake despite being a fantastic shooter.
Imagine its distribution in a Jose Mourinho team: an excellent match.
Another season on loan to Sheffield United
Man United, Chelsea and Tottenham are all Sheffield United’s best known clubs, but a change of scenery the summer before a European championship is a risk.
So pushing for another season on loan at Bramall Lane might work well for him as he has already been brilliant there for the past two years.
Lee Grant has signed an extension to Old Trafford, keeping him in the club until the end of next season. He suggests that the club is preparing for Henderson to have another loan spell, as claimed by ESPN.
Verdict
So what should Henderson do? De Gea is clearly a difficult time, so there is a great chance of becoming Man United’s first choice goalkeeper.
It’s nice to have competition but it’s slightly different on goal. You need a stable goalkeeper who plays almost every game. So Henderson should only return to Old Trafford if he has insurance, otherwise it could harm his development.
It’s the same at Chelsea. Henderson has been much better than Kepa this season, but Kepa will return to fight if Frank Lampard fails to move him in the summer.
Once again in Spurs it’s another potential challenge for the number 1 shirt which is more of a problem than it’s worth.
So Sheffield United is probably the best option for Henderson after all. He made his position on two campaigns. He will be less in the spotlight on Bramall Lane, but that shouldn’t affect his chances in England too much as he has already received a call in October.
