Atlético Madrid only in trouble in extra time: unbeaten since February 1

Atlético Madrid is completely revived after the corona crisis and still seems to crown a mediocre season with Champions League qualification. Los Rojiblancos booked their fourth consecutive victory against Deportivo Alavés, have been unbeaten since February 1 and are firmly in third place in the Primera División.

In the first hour of the game, not much happened for the goals at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano. Atlético Madrid needed a standard situation to break the spell after all: Kieran Trippier brought a free kick in front of the goal, Saúl jumped the highest of everyone and goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco had the mark.

Number 15 Alavés suddenly had to seek the attack, approached the equalizer via Oliver Burke, but got the lid on the nose not long after. Rubén Duarte tackled Marcos Llorente on the back line and the ball hit the spot: Diego Costa signed for the 2-0. The game seemed to be played, but came to life in the final phase. Koke threw himself for a free kick from Joselu and got the ball against his hand, after which the second penalty was a fact: Joselu scored the goal. However, Alavés wouldn’t get further than that 2-1.

Atlético Madrid has now finished three points at number 4 Seville, which already lost points against Real Valladolid on Friday. Number 5 Getafe is on nine points, so it must be very strange if the team of Diego Simeone wants to grab a Champions League ticket.
