Alan Shearer predicts four Man Utd signings required to become contenders

Alan Shearer believes Manchester United will need at least three big names to challenge Man Utd and Liverpool for Premier League titles.

The Red Devils, who have won more league crowns than anyone else, have not raised the famous trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson left seven years ago.

United are currently sixth in the table, but with Bruno Fernandes’ addition, Paul Pogba’s return to fitness and the talents of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Marial and Aaron Wan Bissaka, fans are slightly optimistic about re-entering the English elite.

But Shearer had poured water on these hopes, but insisted that almost half of the Start-XI still had to be upgraded.

The former Newcastle ace told the BBC: “I think three or four big players. Right side of the midfield, possibly a center forward, a middle half and maybe another midfielder.”

Ian Wright added: “This is the kind of signature (Sancho) you have to make if you want to challenge City and Liverpool. Everyone is excited about Bruno Fernandes and Pogba.

“Martial and Rashford, both 19 goals, were the last time a player from Man Utd scored Chicharito (Javier Hernandez) and (Dimitar) Berbatov.

“It seems like it’s going to happen slowly [for United]. “

Shearer’s plan is likely to fall on deaf ears after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer announced that the next transfer window at Old Trafford will not be full.

“I think it will be a quiet transfer window or some other kind of window,” said Solskjaer.

“I think a lot of clubs have to be careful not to spend too much money. Maybe you still don’t know how much you have lost financially during this pandemic and what has happened recently.

“We are pretty relaxed. I am very happy with the squad I have. I think it looks better and better.

“And then there is something in front of us that screams that it makes sense from both a sporting and financial point of view.

“So I know we’ll try, but you can’t make promises.”
