Alan Shearer and Ian Wright agree that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still has some serious work to do in the transfer market if Manchester United wants to challenge the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City for trophies.
United beat Norwich hard to reach their 30th FA Cup semi-final – a record for the competition – with Harry Maguire scoring a late winner in overtime against the Canaries.
After the game, Shearer was asked about the number of signatures needed by United before he could start again to challenge the major trophies.
Said al BBC: ‘I think three or four great players. The right side of the midfield, perhaps a center forward, a center and perhaps another midfielder. “
United have been heavily deployed in a move by Borussia Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho and Wright has agreed that England was exactly the player United needed to attract Old Trafford.
“This is the type of signature (Sancho) they have to make to challenge City and Liverpool,” he said.
‘Everyone is enthusiastic about Bruno Fernandes and Pogba.
Martial and Rashford, both with 19 goals each, the last time all Man Utd players scored were Chicharito (Javier Hernandez) and (Dimitar) Berbatov.
‘It looks like it’s starting to happen [for United]. ‘
Solskjaer was asked about United’s chances of signing Sancho before the clash between his team and Norwich and the Norwegian skillfully dodged the question, insisting that he couldn’t say anything.
But the United chief revealed that United had to wait for the smoke to clear itself of the coronavirus pandemic until it was able to finalize its transfer plans.
“I think it will be a calm transfer window or a visually different type of window,” said Solskjaer.
‘I think many clubs will have to be careful not to spend too much money. You may still not know how financially you lost during this pandemic and what has happened recently.
‘We are quite relaxed. I am very happy with the team I have. I think it is always better.
‘And then there is something in front of us that screams that it makes sense, both from a sporting and financial point of view.
“So I know we’ll try but you can’t make promises.”
