Brownlow medalist Gerard Healy has announced his three-year plan to free Sherrin and improve Footy’s aesthetics – and it includes a radical replacement cap.
The comments from Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson and Cats coach Chris Scott after their respective teams’ victories over the weekend have sparked numerous debates about what AFL can do to improve the game’s state.
I’m talking about Fox Footy’s On the couchHealy said the game had reached a “critical stage” in which action was needed.

“I think the ball movement and the speed of the ball movement are one of the things that people really miss,” he said On the couch.
“The big puzzle is that the players have never been faster, but the overall ball movement has never been slower. The slow ball movement is basically such that people cannot defend the game. We are now using slow ball movements, chest marks and chip kicks to actually defend the ground. “
Healy admitted that a lot of suggestions had been made in the past few days, but the best way forward was a “structured plan”.
And the former midfielder suggested five recommended improvements to Fox Footy on Monday night.
YEAR 1
A) Reduce the rotation to 32 per game
Healy said, “This is next year or even tomorrow. Reduce it to 32, add fatigue and release the pressure. “
B) Increase the step length required to pay a token from 15 m to 25/30 m
Healy said: “The short kick kills football – it drives me crazy. Do it 25 to 30m. “
Dee’s great Garry Lyon argued the climb from 25 to 30 meters was too big, but Healy said he “would like to negotiate”.

C) Introduce the team before the opportunity
Healy said, “Give Clarko what he wants – and when you get the ball this is not a previous opportunity. None, you get free kicks. But at least give the guy trying to win the ball a chance. “
Lyon argued that it would “ask many referees” to decide. But Healy said, “No, you ask less, because all the umpire on the team has to do is do what he does first for the original winner and then for the next guy who gets it. Ask: Did you get this handball? ” ? “
YEAR 2
Reduce rotations to zero
Healy said, “Get tired again … No rotations. The ball will still go faster. “
YEAR 3
Zone four players, each with inside striker 50 on each break (including one in the goal square)
Healy said, “I think the game is best when you have a big guy like King Charlie (Dixon) and kick him forward instead of running back. They somehow restrict players and have to develop a system to do it justice. Four players in strikers 50, including one from the goal square. “
Brown said he was all for reducing the rotation, but added that he had some problems with Healy’s suggestion to reduce the step length.
“There is a cause and effect,” said Brown On the couch. “There is concern that the players will withdraw even further and withdraw even further if it goes up to 25 m.
“Shorter kicks pull up defensive players who create holes in the zone.”
But Healy said the team grid zones had been “refined”, which made ball movement more difficult than ever.
“I’d rather see a long kick for a competition where we might even do a high hark,” he said.
“Wasn’t it fantastic that Charlie Cameron got a good grade? We don’t see enough of it because the ball goes 15 m (sideways) and is not in the air. “
