University Football – Power Ranking for the 11th Week

-

If Saturday was supposed to separate the suitors from the contenders, LSU and Ohio State were the big winners.

The Tigers and Buckeyes once again looked like the most complete teams in the country. LSU ended a run of eight defeats against Alabama with a 46-41 victory on the road. Ohio State won its ninth game in nine tries by 24 points or more by dismantling Maryland 73-14.

Clemson, the reigning national champion, may have been unhappy to be ranked 5th in the initial ranking of the College Football Playoff Selection Committee. The Tigers will probably not be here Tuesday night after winning their 25th consecutive game, 55-10 at NC State.

The other big winners on Saturday were the undefeated Minnesota and Baylor, as well as Oregon and Utah (one loss), which saw their chances of improvement without even taking first place.

Here is the ESPN Power ranking after the 11th week:

1. LSU (9-0)

The Tigers exorcised eight years of frustration by eliminating Alabama 46 to 41 on the road Saturday. The Tigers jumped into the Crimson Tide and led 33-13 at halftime before retaining their first win at Tuscaloosa since a 9-6 overtime decision in 2011. It's also the most recent season in which LSU won a SEC title. the Tigers took a big step forward to return to the conference championship game by beating the tide. Quarterback Joe Burrow was once again great and consolidated his lead in the Heisman Trophy, completing 31 of 39 passes for 393 yards with three touchdowns. Burrow is only the third quarter to throw for at least 350 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions against a team coached by Nick Saban. Chad Kelly of Ole Miss and Deshaun Watson of Clemson were the others, according to statistics from ESPN Stats & Information. Clyde Edwards-Helaire ran three times and scored another goal.

Next: to Ole Miss (7 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN)

The Buckeyes hit Maryland 73-14 and did not miss star defenseman Chase Young, who did not play while the sports department was investigating compliance with the NCAA rules by accepting a loan from a family friend in 2018. The Terrapins only had one meter of offense in the first quarter and 139 in the match – 77 assists and 62 in a hurry. The Buckeyes forced two turnovers and got seven sacks, including two for Tyreke Smith and Davon Hamilton. The Buckeyes hope to learn in the coming week how much time Young will miss. They will probably not need him at Rutgers next weekend either.

Next: at Rutgers (Saturday, to be determined)

The time spent by the Tigers outside the top four of the PCP standings is likely to last a week, after beating the NC State 55-10 and two ranked teams in front of them (Alabama and the Penn State) have lost Saturday. With their 25th consecutive victory, the Tigers have won the Atlantic Division of ACC and will play their seventh consecutive title in Charlotte, North Carolina, on December 7th. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence, accused of throwing interceptions early in the season, has three straight games with three touchdowns and no interceptions – the longest such sequence in the FBS. Rear Travis Etienne ran 14 times for 112 yards with two goals. He became the third player in the history of ACC with 50 career touchdowns, joining James Conner (52) from Pittsburgh and Lamar Jackson (50) from Louisville.

The Crimson Tide seemed particularly tight and made a multitude of mistakes in his five-point loss against LSU, which ended his run of 31 home wins, the longest in the history of the DRY. Strategist Tua Tagovailoa, barely removed from ankle surgery for 20 days, lost a fumble and started an interception in the first half. He recovered to throw for 418 yards with four touchdowns. Star receiver Jerry Jeudy dropped two potential touchdowns after just three assists in eight games. But Alabama's biggest problem was his defense, which made 29 first tries and 559 offensive yards. That's the highest number of points that a Saban coach has dropped out, and the largest number of Alabama's made since dropping 53 points against Tennessee. in 2003. The Crimson Tide will need the Tigers' two defeat in Alabama to reach the SEC championship game. If Bama does not reach Atlanta, he could be excluded from the CFP for the first time since its inception in 2015.

Next: at Mississippi State (noon ET, Saturday, ESPN)

Georgia's defense has made its third shutout of the season and has not yet dropped the touchdown after a big win in the fourth quarter of a 27-0 win over Missouri. This is the first time since 1981 that the Bulldogs have had three shutouts in the same season. Georgia is also the first FBS team of the last 20 seasons not to give up a touchdown in the first nine games, according to research by ESPN Stats & Information. The offensive is sometimes splashed against the Tigers, especially after losing star receiver Lawrence Cager (shoulder) and starting center, Trey Hill (ankle). UGA coach, Kirby Smart, said that Cager could have come back if necessary. Offensive linemen Cade Mays and Isaiah Wilson were also injured in the second half. Forward pick George Pickens scored five passes for 67 yards with two goals. With two touchdowns, quarterback Jake Fromm joined Eric Zeier for third place in the history of the Bulldogs with 67 in his career. Only Aaron Murray (121) and David Greene (72) had more.

Next: in Auburn (3:30 pm ET, Saturday, CBS)

The Ducks are well positioned as the second highest-ranked team in the CFL loss ranking. Oregon has won eight straight games since losing early in the season against Auburn. He should be a big favorite in his last three games against Arizona (home), Arizona State (on the road) and Oregon State (home). The ESPN Football Power Rating (FPI) gives Oregon at least a 84% chance of winning each of those matches. First, the Ducks will try to avenge their worst defeat of the 2018 season, a 44 to 15 loss to Arizona. Oregon returned the ball three times, gave up a punt stuck and gave up 465 yards to the attack in his third loss to the Wildcats in the past five meetings.

Next: vs Arizona (22:30 ET, Saturday, ESPN)

7. Utah (8-1)

The Utes were eighth in the initial ranking of the CFP, the highest in the history of the program. While Utah will need help to get into the top four – the Allstate playoff predictor gives it a 5.4% chance of reaching the playoffs and 19.1% s & # He won his last three regular season games and the Pac-12 Championship Game – he can control whether he plays or not in the Rose Bowl game presented by Northwestern Mutual. Yes, the Golden Gophers are for real. Minnesota surprised the Penn State 31-26 at home, ending a 13-game losing streak against ranked opponents. It was the first Gophers victory over a top 5 in 20 years; In 1999, they beat No. 2 Penn State 24-23 in Happy Valley. Consider these steps: Minnesota is 9-0 for the first time since 1904, winning 11 consecutive games for the first time since 1939-40. 6-0 in Big Ten for the first time since 1961. Next: in Iowa (Saturday, to be determined)

Nittany Lions' title hopes in the Big Ten and the chances of the CFP were devastated by a five-point loss to Minnesota. Penn State actually far exceeded the distance traveled by the Gophers 518-460, but he could not beat turnovers and other errors. PSU quarterback Sean Clifford threw three interceptions – the third in the Minnesota goal area with 1 minute and 1 second left. Clifford's first two interceptions with Antoine Winfield Jr. took place inside the Gophers' 10-yard line. The Nittany Lions hopes for the playoffs are not over yet: after hosting Indiana next weekend, they will face the Buckeyes at the Horseshoe on November 23 before closing the regular season at home against Rutgers. If Penn State can win his last three games, he will win the Big Ten East.

Next: against Indiana (Saturday, to be determined)

The last two games have not been pretty, but Baylor has learned to survive and progress under coach Matt Rhule. For the seventh time in the past two seasons – and for the fourth time in a Big 12 match this season – the Bears have come back from behind to win the victory. Baylor led 9-0 on the TCU at half-time and needed the 51-yard goal from John Mayers (he had never attempted to score more than 40 yards before Saturday), while 39, there was 36 seconds left in regulation time to force overtime. The Bears won 29-23 in the third quarter after Denzel Mims hit a 4-yard touchdown and their defense intercepted a TCU pass in the end zone in the fourth. The Bears have won 11 straight games and remained the only unbeaten Big 12 team to face next weekend's champion four-time defending champion Oklahoma at McLane Stadium in Waco, Texas. The Bears are 3-24 overall against the Sooners, but each of those three wins has been won since 2011. The Bears gave up 607 yards in a 66-33 loss to OU in 2018 .

Next: Oklahoma (7:30 pm ET, Saturday, ABC)

The Sooners have received help on Saturday, but they will need much more to return to the PCP membership. They will also have to be much better defensive. OR lost 21 points in the fourth quarter, before retaining his 42-41 victory over Iowa State at home. The Sooners were leading 42-21 in the fourth quarter, but Brock Purdy, of Iowa State, scored three touchdowns, the last to Charlie Kolar with 24 seconds to play. OR intercepted Purdy's pass on a 2-point conversion pass to preserve the win. Jalen Hurts had 273 yards with three touchdowns and two more points.

Next: at Baylor (7:30 pm ET, Saturday, ABC)

The Gators rebounded after losing to Georgia last weekend by defeating Vanderbilt 56-0 at Swamp. Florida started slowly, having failed to convert a fourth down, missing a field goal and making two interceptions in the first half. The Gators scored 28 points in the third quarter after half-time. Quarterback Kyle Trask scored for a career-high 363 yards with three touchdowns. The Florida defense closed the Commodores, who had only 128 yards of offense and returned the ball three times. Vanderbilt was 3-for-15 on the third decline. The Gators will have to beat Missouri on the road next weekend and hope that Georgia will lose its last two games against SEC, against Auburn and Texas A & M, if it wants to qualify for the championship game against Atlanta.

Next: Missouri (noon ET, Saturday, CBS)

The Tigers will need help to get back into the PFC race, but they can spoil the hopes of their rivals by eliminating Georgia and / or Alabama at home. That's exactly what Auburn was trying to do in 2017, when it crashed at the time. -No. 1 Georgia 40-17 at Jordan-Hare Stadium (The Bulldogs then beat the Tigers 28-7 in the SEC championship game to reach the PCF). Last season, Auburn dropped 303 yards on the floor in a 27-10 loss to UGA. JaTarvious Whitlow, who has only had three stakes in the last three games due to a knee injury, should be behind. Security Jeremiah Dinson (virus) and defensive wing Marlon Davidson (return) are also expected to return after a week off.

Next: Georgia (3:30 pm ET, Saturday, CBS)

The Wolverines have won five of their last six games, and their offense has been successful by scoring 38 points or more in three of the last four games. After the opening date of this weekend, Michigan should face three tough matches against rivals Michigan State (home) and Indiana (road), followed by the biggest game of all, against Ohio State at Big House on November 30th. Jim Harbaugh's teams are 2-2 against the Spartans and, well, you know their record against the Buckeyes. There was a lot of tension before Michigan's 21-7 win over the Spartans last season, and Harbaugh coach and MSU coach Mark Dantonio exchanged words as a result . Michigan's defense limited the Spartans to just 94 yards and a 0-0 record in the third attempt.

Next: against Michigan State (noon ET, Saturday, Fox)

After a point win against Virginia Tech last weekend, the Fighting Irish did not play in a 38-7 defeat at Duke. Quarterback Ian Book completed 18 of 32 passes for 181 yards with four touchdowns and ran 12 times for 139 yards. He became the first player in Notre Dame history to throw four touchdowns and run 100 yards in the same game. His 139 rushing yards was the fifth highest total by an Irish quarterback. Receiver Chase Claypool collected five catches for 97 yards with one point. The Notre Dame defense closed the Blue Devils, limiting them to just 197 offensive yards and imposing two turnovers. If the Irish win their last three regular season games – at home against the Navy and Boston College and at Stanford – they will remain in the game for a game of petanque of the New Year of the Six.

Next: Marine (2:30 pm ET, Saturday, NBC)

After a slow start against Tulsa and East Carolina in their last two games, the Bearcats wereted no time dismantling the humble UConn in a 48-3 rout Saturday. Cincinnati remained undefeated in the AAC games and looking for the automatic place of the Group of 5 in part of the Six's New Year. Next: South Florida (Saturday, to be determined)

Memphis had an extra week to enjoy his party after a 54-48 victory over SMU. Another potential distraction: Memphis coach Mike Norvell has emerged as a Florida State candidate. This will not be the last time you will hear his name for a vacant Power 5 coach position.

Next: in Houston (Saturday, to be determined)

Boise State remains undefeated in Mountain West play (5-0), but his 20-17 overtime win over Wyoming was not the kind of performance that helped strengthen his position and be considered the best team of the group of 5 in the country. Playing without starting quarterback Hank Bachmeier, the Broncos could not get anything offensive – they had managed only 285 yards of offense – and had to wipe out a fourth-quarter deficit to escape home in a match where they were favored by 12.5 points.

Next: New Mexico (10:15 am ET, Saturday, ESPN2)

20 SMU (9-1)

The Mustangs continued to play with fire in a 59-51 decision against East Carolina. The Wildcats' three-game winning streak came to an end when Cameron Dicker of Texas scored a 26-yard goal as the time expired after a 27-24 loss. The loss probably puts an end to Kansas State's hopes of reaching the Big 12 championship match. The first season of coach Chris Klieman, whose team has already qualified for a cup game, has always been a success . The Wildcats lost a 14-0 lead and did not score an offensive touch after the first quarter. Quarterback Skylar Thompson scored for a career-high 253 yards with two touchdowns, and Joshua Youngblood posted a 98-yard return kick. The Wildcats did not convert a third late in the second period. Kansas State should have the opportunity to strengthen its position in the top 12 players in the Big 12 Cup. The Wildcats host West Virginia, play Texas Tech and stage the state of Iowa.

Next: West Virginia (3:30 pm ET, Saturday, to be determined)

After winning four consecutive matches in the Big Ten Series for the first time since 1993, the Hoosiers were manhandled when they lost starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. following an end-of-season injury . Penix, Indiana's first freshman to make his quarterback debut since Antwaan Randle El in 1998, was operated on Monday to repair a clavicle injury. The good news is that junior Peyton Ramsey played a lot this season while Penix was recovering from other injuries. Ramsey completed 72 percent of his attempts for 1,302 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions. He should start against Penn State next weekend. The Hoosiers are 1-21 against the Nittany Lions, with their only win in 2013.

The Demon Deacons were the opposite of "Bud Foster Day" at Virginia Tech, while the Hokies paid tribute to their long-time defensive coordinator with a heavy 36-17 performance. Demon Deacons quarterback Jamie Newman completed only 16 of 36 passes for a total of 238 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Obviously, this is not the kind of result that Wake Forest wanted to see participate in the road trip of the reigning national champion Clemson next weekend. As the only ACC team alongside the Tigers with less than three losses, Wake Forest is still looking for the league's automatic title in the Capital One Orange Bowl.
