Carla Suárez Renews Spain Billie Jean King Cup Captaincy Through 2029

Extending a Leadership Cycle

Suárez, 38, originally took over the captaincy from Anabel Medina in 2025. With this new three-year extension covering the 2027, 2028, and 2029 seasons, the former player will complete a five-year mandate leading the national squad. Under her direction, Spain reached the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen during her debut 2025 campaign, placing the team among the world’s top eight nations.

The momentum continued into the 2026 season, when the Spanish team advanced to the tournament semifinals. That run marked Spain’s best performance in the international team competition since 2008, when the nation last reached that stage. In the 2026 quarterfinals, Spain defeated Kazakhstan before falling in the semifinals to eventual champions Czech Republic, where players Jéssica Bouzas and Cristina Bucsa competed against Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova.

Player Trust and Federation Backing

Speaking after the agreement was finalized at the RFET headquarters in Barcelona, Suárez emphasized the importance of squad harmony and athlete progression. “I am very happy with the confidence shown by the president and his team,” Suárez stated in remarks distributed by the federation. “For me, the trust shown by the players has also been a priority, and I am happy to see them evolve and witness the commitment they are making to this national team.”

Federation president Miguel Díaz Román highlighted the distinct advantages of having a former elite competitor guide the national roster. “Having a captain of Carla’s level is not easy,” Díaz Román noted. “For us, it is fortunate because she was a top-10 player, and she transmits to the team that tranquility and tennis wisdom that she possesses. That is important for a captaincy, in addition to the respect the players have for her.”
