Alexander Zverev’s recent successes on the tennis court have been matched by notable family moments off it, highlighted by his partner Sophia Thomalla joining him at major events alongside close family members. The German tennis star secured a decisive victory for Team Europa at the Laver Cup in London, defeating Learner Tien 7:6 (7:3), 6:3 to claim the final three points in a 13:5 win over Team World.
The triumph in London marked the fourth time Zverev personally clinched the decisive win for Team Europa at the annual team competition. Just days before the opening gala at the event, Thomalla shared a retrospective post on Instagram comparing a current photo from the gala with an image from five years prior at the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden, when Zverev was named Germany’s Sportsman of the Year in 2021. “5 years später. Kaum verändert, nur um zwei Grand-Slam-Titel reicher,” the 36-year-old moderator and actress wrote alongside the pictures.
Family Presence at the Davis Cup
Before arriving in London for the Laver Cup, Zverev competed in the Davis Cup for the German national team in Halle, where he secured wins against Matej Dodig and Dino Prizmic. During the tie against Croatia, Thomalla watched from the stands in the company of Zverev’s mother, Irina, and his five-year-old daughter, Mayla.
According to reports from the German media, Mayla frequently sought out Thomalla’s company during the matches, at one point sitting on her lap and giving her a kiss on the cheek. Zverev joked about the unusual presence of his mother in the stands, noting that Irina typically avoids attending his matches in person due to nerves. “Es kam so, dass Mayla halt gerne zuschauen wollte und deswegen musste Mama zuschauen,” Zverev explained regarding his mother’s attendance.
Logistical Hurdles and Future Plans
Zverev’s broader family circle has faced travel complexities throughout the season. Earlier in the year, his grandmother Natalia managed to attend his matches in Halle, though her stay was limited. Zverev noted that because she holds a Russian passport originating from Sochi, organizing her travel requires careful planning.
Away from the immediate tournament schedule, Zverev and Thomalla have maintained a public relationship for approximately five years. While Thomalla watched the US Open final from a distance rather than attending in New York, she has continued to support the world-class player through his subsequent competitive blocks. In recent media interviews, Zverev has also addressed his personal life, indicating an openness to expanding his family in the future as he balances a demanding international tennis calendar.
