Six players from the province of Soria represented Spain at the European Senior Badminton Championships in Cagliari, Italy, competing across multiple age and skill brackets against more than 1,500 athletes from across the continent. The tournament, which ran for nine days through late September, brought together a massive international contingent, including 75 players representing the Spanish delegation.
Sorian Contingent Secures Selection Through National Ranking
Qualification for the continental championship required athletes to finish within the top eight selection tier of their respective categories and modalities under the Spanish national ranking system. Four players earned their spots from Club Bádminton Soria: Manuel Acero, David Hernansanz, Santiago Martínez, and José Carlos Pérez. They were joined by Cristina Puebla and Sergio Latorre, who represented AD89 based in the municipality of El Burgo de Osma.
Tournament Draw and Competitive Challenges in Cagliari
Playing on the courts of the Sardinian capital, the Sorian delegation faced a demanding tier of international opponents. Five of the six competitors contested two distinct tournament modalities, while Sergio Latorre opted to withdraw from the singles draw to focus his efforts elsewhere. According to regional reports, the overall playing standard across the championship was exceptionally high. Compounded by unfavorable draws that pitted the Spanish players against established European powerhouses early on, none of the Sorian competitors managed to advance into the final rounds.
Gaining International Experience for the Domestic Calendar
Local sports coverage emphasized that facing elite European talent provided valuable competitive exposure and elevated the players’ tactical level. With the international showcase concluded, the group has turned its focus back to domestic competition. Their next major challenge arrives in mid-October at the top-tier national circuit stop in the Málaga municipality of Ronda.
