The “Village Basketball Association” (CunBA) in Langao County, Shaanxi Province, is expanding its international profile, attracting overseas talent to its rural courts. The fourth edition of the tournament, known as the Nangongshan Cup, continues to draw global interest following a series of high-profile exhibition matches featuring teams from the United States and Spain.
International Expansion at the Nangongshan Cup
Langao County’s basketball scene has evolved from a local grassroots event into a platform for cross-cultural exchange. On September 17, more than 20 basketball players from the American STTP Ohio team and the Spanish HIPE Barcelona team arrived in the region to participate in the 2026 China-Europe-America Basketball Challenge. The event, held at the Chengguan Town Sports Center, marked the first time the local tournament hosted such a large contingent of players from two European and American countries simultaneously.
The Spanish HIPE Barcelona team secured the tournament title on September 19 following three days of play. Beyond the competitive aspect, the visiting athletes participated in local cultural activities, including a night cruise on the Langhe River and tours of the Nangongshan scenic area.
Player Reception and Local Engagement
The influx of international talent has altered the atmosphere of the Langao sports scene. Santiago Ensuradel, a player for the HIPE Barcelona team, noted that the intensity of the local crowd and the quality of the facilities exceeded his expectations. “The atmosphere was very surprising, and the fans were incredibly enthusiastic,” Ensuradel said. Local residents, such as Tang Jing, reported using the events as an opportunity to share local history and customs with the visitors, noting that the players interacted frequently with the spectators.
The impact of the international presence has been mutual. Coaches and players described the local hospitality and landscape as a highlight of their tour. Jaime Rubiera, coach of the HIPE Barcelona team, stated that the team would prioritize returning to Langao for future competitions, citing the scenery and the local culture as key factors in their positive experience.
Tournament Growth and Future Schedule
Since its inception in 2023, the Langao “CunBA” has hosted nearly 100 international players from 18 different countries and more than 300 teams from 16 Chinese provinces. The tournament aims to serve as a bridge for cultural communication through sports, significantly increasing the brand’s visibility across digital platforms.
The next phase of the 2026 Nangongshan Cup is scheduled to begin on September 30. According to Shi Liushan, general manager of the Langshui Liuyun Cultural Media Co., Ltd., the upcoming segment will feature the domestic commercial basketball team “Jimeng 116.” The event will include a variety of formats, such as one-on-one, three-on-three, and traditional five-on-five games. Organizers have confirmed that three additional international players are scheduled to attend the September 30 events to engage with local fans and continue the tournament’s international outreach.
