Military Service and Athletic Background
Following his graduation from high school in Watertown, Howard George enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1952. His military tenure included one tour of duty in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. During his service, he received several commendations, including the Purple Heart, the Conspicuous Service Cross, the Navy Achievement Medal, and the Vietnamese Campaign Medal with seven stars.
George integrated athletics into his military life, serving as a participant on Marine Corps football, wrestling, and judo teams. This focus on combat sports and physical conditioning would remain a central theme throughout his civilian life.
Law Enforcement and Professional Career
After concluding his military service in the 1970s, George returned to the Watertown area and joined the Office of the Jefferson County District Attorney as a criminal investigator. In 1977, he transitioned to the private sector by establishing his own private investigation agency, a business that was eventually passed down to his son.
George held a variety of professional roles throughout his career. His work included managing the Long Bow Archery Shop, employment with UPS, and serving as a security director at both the Salmon Run Mall and the House of the Good Samaritan Hospital. His public service extended to the judiciary, where he served as the town of Watertown justice of the peace for 18 years, a role that included officiating numerous weddings.
Founding the Northern New York Judo Jujitsu and Wrestling Club
Beyond his professional and civic responsibilities, George was active in the regional sports community as the founder of the Northern New York Judo Jujitsu and Wrestling Club. The organization focused on grappling arts, and in later years, it evolved to provide training for young men interested in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).
This club served as a platform for George to pass on the techniques he had refined during his years in the Marine Corps and his subsequent civilian career. By establishing this training center, he maintained a presence in local athletics until his later years.
