Christian Zawieschitzky became the youngest Austrian national team goalkeeper since 1945 during Sunday’s 3:1 victory over Kosovo in front of 47,000 fans. Head coach Ralf Rangnick informed the 19-year-old Salzburg netminder of his historic debut just one day prior to kickoff.
A Historic Call-Up and Nervous Debut
The teenager admitted to feeling surprised when the team management delivered the news ahead of the fixture. Managing the pressure required a straightforward approach on the field. “Just turn off your brain and push through,” Zawieschitzky said regarding his mindset before stepping onto the pitch. He described the overall experience as brutal and very special, noting that he did feel a touch of goosebumps during his baptism of fire. During the match, the young keeper produced a strong save and remained powerless against a penalty converted by the opposition. Although conceding from the spot caused some frustration, he assessed his overall performance as quite okay.
A Clever Tactical Moment and Matchday Memory
Beyond his shot-stopping, the debutant provided a memorable moment of game management in the 83rd minute. After Kosovo scored, Zawieschitzky grabbed the match ball and hid it underneath his jersey to run down the clock. “I thought to myself, I’ll just put it under my shirt, they won’t get it out that easily,” he explained of the unorthodox tactic. Following the final whistle, the young player secured a tangible memento of the occasion by dedicating his debut jersey to his mother.
Rangnick’s Assessment and Squad Rotation
National team manager Ralf Rangnick offered high praise for the performance, noting that watching him play made it difficult to remember he was only 19 years old. Rangnick stated that the coaching staff had recognized the goalkeeper’s immense potential for some time, bolstered by evaluations from former Salzburg coach Onur Cinel. Despite the successful outing, Zawieschitzky’s run with the senior squad is temporarily complete. Per a prior agreement with U21 head coach Peter Perchtold, the goalkeeper transitions to the under-21 selection for upcoming European Championship qualifiers. Meanwhile, LASK goalkeeper Lukas Jungwirth remains with the senior team alongside Salzburg squad member Alexander Schlager as the goalkeeping rotation continues to develop.
