Miami Dolphins Host Flag Football Clinic for Youth Ahead of Historic NFL Game in Rio

Flag Football Clinic Brings NFL Initiative to Rio de Janeiro Youth Ahead of Historic Maracanã Match

The community outreach event preceded the first NFL game in the city, scheduled for Sunday afternoon between the Baltimore Ravens and the Dallas Cowboys at the historic Maracanã stadium.

Bridging Sports, Technology, and Education

Young participants rotated through a series of drills designed to demonstrate that American football requires far more than physical strength. Alongside traditional on-field athletic exercises, the curriculum integrated concepts of mathematics, data analysis, and sports technology. Promoters aimed to show how cognitive skills support high-performance athletes while offering students a broader perspective on modern athletics.

U.S. Embassy and Consulates Chargé d’Affaires Kimberly Kelly, U.S. Consul General in Rio de Janeiro Ryan Rowlands, and representatives from the Miami Dolphins organization attended the morning sessions. U.S. and Brazilian Marines, alongside volunteers and staff from the Maven Strategy Group and the Grupo +Unidos, assisted with the on-field activities.

Diplomatic Impact and Community Partnerships

Organizers emphasized the initiative’s role as a diplomatic platform connecting the United States and Brazil through sport, particularly as flag football gains momentum among teenagers and young adults. U.S. officials noted that the sport teaches vital life lessons beyond the playbook.

“Ver mais de 100 crianças e jovens aqui hoje mostra o poder do esporte como ferramenta de transformação,” U.S. Consul General Ryan Rowlands stated, noting that flag football imparts leadership, discipline, confidence, and teamwork. “Este tipo de iniciativa ajuda a tornar esse esporte mais acessível e popular.”

Chargé d’Affaires Kimberly Kelly highlighted the long-term relationships fostered by the collaboration. “A clínica de flag football de hoje demonstra como nossa parceria com a NFL pode criar oportunidades de intercâmbio, fortalecer relacionamentos e construir conexões duradouras,” Kelly said.

Daniel Grynberg, executive director, pointed to the educational dimensions of the outreach. “A clínica mostra que o futebol americano vai além de uma modalidade esportiva. Ele também é uma porta de entrada para compreender como a tecnologia e diferentes áreas do conhecimento estão presentes no esporte,” Grynberg remarked.

Maven Strategy Group founder and CEO Scarlen Martinez emphasized the global reach of the Huddle Abroad program. “O Huddle Abroad busca aproveitar o alcance global do esporte para conectar comunidades, criar oportunidades para jovens e construir pontes entre diferentes culturas,” Martinez noted regarding the design and implementation of the sports diplomacy initiative.

Countdown to Kickoff at the Maracanã

The youth clinic served as a morning prelude to the main event at the Maracanã, where the Baltimore Ravens and the Dallas Cowboys prepared to kick off at 5:25 p.m. Brasília time.
